Aging Services Schedules Georgia Public Guardians Training

Volunteers interested in becoming legal guardians for vulnerable adults will have the opportunity to attend an informational session in Albany, February 8-9, and in Valdosta on February 10. Guardians are appointed by the probate court to make decisions for an adult who has been found to be incapacitated and unable to make or communicate decisions concerning his or her health or safety, and who have no one else willing or able to serve as their guardians.

The Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), Division of Aging Services (DAS) is working with probate courts and the Georgia Council of Probate Court Judges to maintain a registry of and provide training for public guardians. Information sessions will be held Thursday, February 8, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Easter Seals - Southern Georgia, 1906 Palmyra Road in Albany;    Friday, February 9, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the SOWEGA Council on Aging, 1105 Palmyra Road in Albany; and Saturday, February 10, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Valdosta Senior Community Center, 1360 East Park Avenue in Valdosta. Anyone who is interested in becoming a Georgia Public Guardian should attend one of these sessions before committing to the 20 hours of required training.

“Through Georgia’s new public guardian initiative, DHR/DAS and the probate court are training volunteers and professionals to serve as caring, compassionate personal advocates for vulnerable adults who need someone to make decisions on their behalf,” said DAS Director Maria Greene. “We hope that individuals, professionals, and faith-based and other community organizations will consider volunteering.” Read more at aging.dhr.georgia.gov.
